Craggy Range Sophia 2009

Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, North Island, New ZealandThe 09 Sophia boasts the most cabernet sauvignon ever at 25 per cent mix seven per cent cabernet franc and three percent petit verdot. The nose mixes pepper, smoky, cedar, tobacco, resin and liquorice with streaks of menthol, chocolate vanilla saddle leather and cassis. Round, full, smooth, fresh palate with supple fine grained tannins. Smoky prune, coffee, vanilla, peppery, blackberry, anise flavours entice with flecks of orange, tobacco, leather and cranberry mint. Good finesse if a bit soft and warm on the finish. Approachable now but should develop more over the next two to four years. Impressive merlot.Tasted: 29 April 2012Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
