Craggy Range Sophia 2001

Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, North Island, New ZealandRich Damson plum aromas with creamy vanilla clove and pepper and sweaty leather flecks in the finish. Even richer Christmas pudding fruit flavours -- a monster in the mouth. Rich, warm, peppery and long on the mid-palate with creamy, vanilla cola finish. There are dense round tannins in the finish that will require more time to dissipate. An outstanding effort. The wine is made from two specially selected parcels of merlot (61%) one parcel each of cabernet franc (23%) malbec (14%) and cabernet sauvignon (2%). Total maceration time was 28 days. After pressing malolactic fermentation was completed in barrel, of which 70% was new and all was French.Tasted: 04 May 2003Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
