Nicolás Catena Zapata 1999

Mendoza, ArgentinaZapata, Catena's super-Argentine red, takes its name from Nicolas Catena's mother and also lends its moniker to the company's newest and most advanced Mendoza winery. Although Alamos, Catena and Catena Alta are made on-site the flagship red is Zapata. It's a limited bottling of less than 1000 cases made from a rigourous fruit selection from two vineyards - Uxmal in the district of Agrelo in Lujan de Cuyo and Nicasia in the district La Consulta in San Carlos. The 99 follows the initial 1997 (there was no 1998) and the blend is 82 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 18 per cent malbec. Look for spice laden back fruit flavours with a smooth sleek texture that makes it drinkable now but it should hold well through 2009 and beyond.
