Nicolás Catena Zapata 1997

Mendoza, ArgentinaZapata, Catena's super-Argentine red, takes its name from Nicolas Catena's mother and also lends its moniker to the company's newest and most advanced Mendoza winery. Although Alamos, Catena and Catena Alta are made on-site the flagship red is Zapata. It's a limited bottling (500 cases) made from a rigourous fruit selection from two vineyards - one at Tupungato and one at Agrelo. It will not be made every year and while issue one is 90 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 10 per cent malbec there is no set varietal pattern. The initial vintage is the 1997 - there was no 1998 and very little was made in 1999. It's a lovely, big, rich, elegant wine that is aged in 100 per cent new French oak. Winemaker Jose Galante has worked hard and produced a very Bordelais style red with cassis and plum fruit and cedary Pauillac overtones. It's an impressive first release that will require more bottle time to reach its zenith. Soft tannins mark its super long finish.Tasted: 01 March 2000Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
