Top 10 : Value Wines

By: Treve Ring & Anthony Gismondi
It's January; time for everything in moderation, especially budget.

We all know them – we’ve even been one ourselves.

That person, come January, who swears off alcohol in a New Year, fresh start, liver cleansing, clean living kick. Yes – post-holiday restraint and moderation is a smart and healthy move. But – really?! No wine?!  The thought to us always sounded a bit too – un-moderate. Wine, in many cultures including our homes, is a part of daily life. Grapes are key members of the fruit group after all. Numerous studies have shown that wine – in moderation – leads to a healthy, lengthy, and much more fun life. According to science, a daily glass for women (two for men) can keep your heart healthy, help you lose weight, reduce forgetfulness, boost your immunity, and help prevent bone loss. Pay attention all you January resolution makers – it doesn’t get much better than this.

However, what many do need to cut back on after a holiday season of excess is expenses. That’s why we've put together a Top 10 (and ties) Under $20, so you can boost your health, and your bank account, this month. Note the high proportion of wines from Spain, Portugal, Chile and Argentina on this list, all important sources of value for quality on our market.

Every week Treve Ring and Anthony Gismondi collaborate on our Top Ten list, released on Thursday morning, often with a timely theme. If you count carefully the list will more than likely exceed ten names but only because we believe if any wine is tied by a score that makes our list it should be included. We know many of you are wine savvy and can do your own sleuthing to locate our weekly picks but for those who asked: BCLS means it is sold in government retail stores; when we say private wine shops we mean it could be in any private wine shop or liquor retail store (LRS); winery direct means check with the winery online. If it’s not sold in BC we usually try and give you a suggested retail price. Prices change hourly in BC – the price we post is what we are given at publication.
