Real Wine Round Up

By: Anthony Gismondi & Treve Ring
Wines that make you stop and think.

Here's a list of Real Wines, designated by the GOW team since May this year.

Real wines are scored like any other wines at GOW, but they have something more to say to us as tasters with long memory banks. They represent a small elite group of wines that, like terroir, have no definitive definition. While it may be hard to explain, it is more about a wine finding us than us noticing it. It allows each of us to taste independently yet gives us a tool to highlight an excellent wine we want to share with you.

If you were to analyze all the Real Wines in the system, we hope the only pattern you discover are wines that stop and make you think. Wines that stand out from the norm and wines that we excitedly describe as electric. They could be farmed organically or biodynamically, sustainably or conventionally. They might see concrete, stainless, wood, or amphorae, but none of that matters; they taste real. In the end, if a wine receives a Real Wine designation at GOW, it has impressed and imprinted on us in a way very few do. If you'd like to find the real wines as they are posted, visit our Wine Search and the "Real Wines" field. Open the drop-down and select "Search only Real Wines." We also feature at least one Real Wine in our free monthly newsletter

Every week Treve Ring and Anthony Gismondi collaborate on our Top Ten list, released on Thursday morning, often with a timely theme. If you count carefully the list will more than likely exceed ten names but only because we believe if any wine is tied by a score that makes our list it should be included. We know many of you are wine savvy and can do your own sleuthing to locate our weekly picks but for those who asked: BCLS means it is sold in government retail stores; when we say private wine shops we mean it could be in any private wine shop or liquor retail store (LRS); winery direct means check with the winery online. If it’s not sold in BC we usually try and give you a suggested retail price. Prices change hourly in BC – the price we post is what we are given at publication.
