Chablis, Burgundy, FranceJean Collet started Domaine Collet in 1954, the heir of a Chablis grape-growing family since 1792. It passed down to his son, and how to grandson Romain, in charge of his first vintage at age 21. Romain moved the domaine to native yeast, and organic and biodynamic farming. Les Forêts is on the left bank, on the western side of the Montmains hill, planted in 2008 inside a steeply sloping amphitheatre. It was native fermented with full MLF, and aged for 11 months in concrete egg. After destemming, this had 3 hours of skin contact in the press before a stainless ferment and rest with full MLF. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The nose is classic New World Pinot, with dark cherries, earthy forest floor, and a fair bit of spice on the finish. The attack is medium-rich, with juicy, stemmy cherry, more spice, and some sticky tannins. It is understandably youthful and will need some time to settle down and find its core. It is made in the traditional pinot manner, hand picked and hand plunged. Okanagan Falls, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAfter a couple of very challenging years, it's a delight to see Synchromesh wines available again. From the home estate Storm Haven Vineyard, this pinot noir is of the Amelia Block and Block 4, and blends clones 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, rooted in clay, granite, and sandy gravels. This had 4 days cold soak (80% whole berry) before a month maceration / fermentation, before resting in oak. Fragrant plum, wild blackberries, black liquorice fill the juicy 13.1% palate, seasoned with smoked stones, and wrapped with long, sinewy tannins. Rioja Alavesa, Rioja, SpainVillota is a fourth generation family owned winery, established almost 100 years ago in Rioja Alavesa. They co-founded and supplied grapes to Contino, Rioja's first single estate winery with CVNE, before they decided to focus on their own name and brand in 2013. This is a Viñedo Singular, a relatively new classification for single vineyard, old vine wines. This dry farmed bush vine tempranillo was planted in 1930, in Laserna's sandy soils, close to the Ebro. Destemmed berries were native fermented in concrete with skins over 18 days before moving to 500L French puncheon for MLF and aging. It remained there (50% new) for 14 months, followed by 3 months in concrete. Crushed florals and crushed stones mingle on the medium bodied palate, surrounded with jammy plums, fragrant boysenberry, and scrubby herbs. Tannins are finely grippy and structural, kissed with concrete's rasp and seasoned subtly with toast. This organic sangiovese is a blend of four sites in Radda in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Tibuca, and Le Noci, averaging 500 metres above sea level on marl, limestone, and clay. AustraliaIn northern Tasmania's Cradle Coast, Ghost Rock has been instrumental in shaping the region over the past two decades, and the winery is now in the capable hands of 2nd generation Justin Arnold and his wife Alicia Peardon. The Supernatural labels reflect that nothing is added, and nothing is taken away = Super Natural. This estate pinot blends 9 clones, all individually picked based on ripeness. All were native fermented and cold soaked, before being pressed to French barrel (25% new) for 7-12 months, depending on the lot. After blending, this was bottled unfired and unfiltered. Elgin, Overberg, South AfricaWell known for their Radford Dale and The Winery of Good Hope brands, sourcing special vineyards throughout the Cape, this Freedom Pinot Noir comes off their organic estate in Elgin. From 5 estate blocks planted 2008-2015, and Dijon clones 115, 667, and 777, this was native fermented as whole berries in open-top fermenters, with 15 days maceration, before being basket pressed to barrels (10% new) for 1 year. Fragrant strawberry, sour cherry, crushed florals, and subtle forest teem through this medium bodied red, with gentle, ripe tannins sticking to the sides, and a lingering smoked stone on the finish.
