Natte Valleij POW 2021

Coastal Region, South AfricaNatte Valleij's old cape Dutch buildings have seen a lot of history, including housing a prisoner of war who was captured and exiled to the Cape during WWII. He most likely contributed to the farm's farming and winemaking while living in the cottage that winemaker Alex Milner calls home. The inscription P.O.W. B.T. 27/12/1943 is the fighter's only mark. In his honour, Milner created this limited release wine, his take on a SA Bordeaux blend. 2021 is based on 59% cabernet sauvignon (decomposed granites of Simonsberg-Paarl), 32% cinsault (dryland bush vines from Wellington, Swartland, and Simonsberg-Paarl), and 9% syrah (dryland bush vines from Darling's Malsbury shale). All was native fermented, pressed to 225-300L barrel after 10 days where it rests for 1 year, then blended and aged for a further 2 years in foudre. Spiced black cherry, sultry plum, cracked peppercorns roll along the silken palate, with a sour cherry acidity to straighten, and dark cocoa dusted tannins to structure. Enjoyable solo, but worthy of a braai.Tasted: 17 January 2026Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
