Natte Valleij POW 2016
Coastal Region, South AfricaNatte Valleij's old cape Dutch buildings have seen a lot of history, including housing a prisoner of war who was captured and exiled to the Cape during WWII. He most likely contributed to the farm's farming and winemaking while living in the cottage that winemaker Alex Milner calls home. The inscription P.O.W. B.T. 27/12/1943 is his only mark. In his honour, Milner created this limited release wine, his take on SA Bordeaux blend. In 2016, this was 75% cabernet sauvignon / 25% merlot, rested 36 months in large oak, from vines tucked near the Simonsberg Mountain. Plump with wild blackberries, damson plums, and scented with lavender, pine, rosemary, bay, and fresh thyme, this floods the fuller palate with a wave of juiciness, held in place by furry tannins. There's a lovely herbaceous note, both fresh and dried, that makes this intriguing sip after sip, even without the addition of cabernet franc like the previous vintage.Tasted: 24 June 2020Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:BC | $40.00 | 750ml | private wine shops |
