Clos du Soleil Signature 2021
British Columbia, CanadaThis year's Signature, the aptly named flagship red of the winery, blends fruit from Keremeos and Cawston. The 2021 result was 34% merlot, 32% cabernet sauvignon, 18% cabernet franc, 9% malbec, and 7% petit verdot. Each vineyard block was harvested separately, destemmed, and native fermented in concrete. After a gentle pressing, the wines aged 16 months in French oak, with the best barrels selected for the final blend. Smoked cassis, blackberry, thorns, pipe tobacco, and toasted baking spice roll out across the full palate, seasoned with cracked pepper and dark chocolate. Tannins are at the fore, but well integrated into the density of fruit here, giving just a sticky tug as reminder of their presence. The stony finish lingers with gravels and crushed violets.
