Le Volte dell' Ornellaia 2021

Tuscany, ItalyLe Volte dell'Ornellaia is all about drinkability. It is designed to be consumed before the flagship Ornellaia is ready, hence the softer tannins and brighter fruit. That's not to say it's simple, as it is nothing of the sort. 2021 was a fabulous year for grapes in Tuscany and winemaker Olga Fusari has done a fine job of letting the year and the terroir shine through. The Bolgheri-based red mixes mostly merlot with 20% sangiovese and 12-14% cabernet sauvignon. The attack is typically generous, with blackberry and red currant mixed with savoury dried herbs, balsamic, and black olives. Drink or hold this wine through 2027 when it should reach its peak. The different varieties are fermented separately in small steel tanks to maintain their varietal characteristics. Post fermentation, the wine is aged for 10 months, partly in used Ornellaia barrels and partly in concrete tanks, to create a balance between tannic structure and an expression of fresh fruit.Tasted: 04 November 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
