Château Pesquié Ascensio 2020

Ventoux, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceThere was no 2019 Ascensio made, but 2020 was a much more favourable vintage, bringing the single vineyard wine back into the rotation. What a bottle it is. Its name celebrates the tradition of the ascent of Mont Ventoux, which goes back to the XIV century. Ascensio is produced in tiny quantities (less than 3000 bottles), from exceptional vintages, from 50-80-year-old grenache vines. Ascensio is all about the power and attraction of fully ripe grenache mixed with 5% syrah. The colour is red and black, and the nose is an intense rush of black raspberries, dark plums, licorice, minerals, and garrigue. This is a blockbuster grenache but with a fresh and vibrant undercurrent. It is just a baby, but you can drink it now. I advise waiting five to six years before you open the next bottle. Perfect for bœuf bourguignon, venison, duck confit, or more simply grilled sausages. The fruit is farmed manually, and all treatments and composts used in the vineyard are organic. The fermentation occurs in stainless steel, but the aging occurs in a mix of stainless steel tanks, 600 and 300-litre French oak barrels, and concrete.Tasted: 06 October 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
