Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalAt a basic level, late bottled vintage port is a single vintage blend aged four to six years in oak casks, versus the 24 months given vintage port before bottling. The extra time in wood mellows the ferocious character of a spirited young port so that it's perfectly drinkable when released under an LBV designation. The '14 RP LBV is a 45/30/10/15 of touriga nacional, sousão, touriga franca, and old vine field blend. Look for mature black fruit, figs, and a potent violet and mineral undercurrent. Fresh, dry, and firm, this LBV is bottled unfined and unfiltered, so it is ageing slowly, showing some refined vintage port attributes given its station.
