CheckMate Artisanal Winery Little Pawn Chardonnay Jagged Rock Vineyard 2021

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaLittle Pawn tends to be the group’s most reductive chardonnay, coming off the highly acclaimed Jagged Rock Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. Dijon 76, with its abundant stone fruit, makes up more than half the blend, while interestingly, it is joined by the Dekleva clone planted by John Simes in the late 1990s on the sands of the Black Sage Bench, adding complexity and lift to the wine. It is 55% wild fermented and entirely barrel aged in 61% new French oak for 16 months. In its final year of organic certification, the alcohol comes under 14%. Evolving viticulture and irrigation techniques have further reduced the crop. The vines are no-maintenance and self-limiting in yields, intensifying its vibrant nose of rosewater, peach blossoms, and melon, followed by a delicious palate of peach, lime rind, and green tea, dusted in a saline mineral, fennel finish. Fresh and elegant, it's Next World chardonnay, and the good news is that production nearly doubled this year to 34 barrels.Tasted: 08 March 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
