Rowen Red Wine 2018

Sonoma County, California, United StatesPerhaps unbeknownst to the Bordelais, Bordeaux varieties thrive on steep terrain and volcanic soil, which aptly describes Cooley Ranch Vineyard with elevations ranging from 800 to 2,040 feet. Here, being above the fog line allows for full phenolic ripening during most harvest periods. Rowen is a robust, spicy mountain wine that mixes linear styling with lush fruit. The blend is 55% cabernet sauvignon, 19% malbec, 16% syrah, 6% petit verdot and 4% viognier, the latter co-fermented with the syrah, Rhône style. It then spent 24 months in French oak barrels, of which 75% were new. Look for floral notes upfront, followed by rich black cherries, blackberries, a wisp of toasted smoke, savoury dried herbs, and sweet vanilla. As big as it is, you can drink it now with the right food. Lamb or pork ribs would be the match. Or you can confidently cellar this for five to seven years before revisiting it.Tasted: 12 January 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
