Luis Seabra Xisto Cru 2021

Cima Corga, Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalAfter a successful decade as winemaker at Niepoort, Luis Seabra decided to break out on his own, leaving his own name on the wines of Douro. From two clay loam / blue slate high altitude vineyards in the Cima Corgo, Xisto Cru Tinto blends Rufete, Touriga Franca, Tinta Carvalha, Alicante Bouchet, Donzelinho Tinto, Malvazia Preta and others (but no Touriga Nacional), from vineyards 80+ years old. This was native fermented, whole cluster, with maceration over one month in open old wood port wine vats. Post ferment, this was aged 20 months in 228L French barrels. This is built on slate structure, with wild cassis, plum, purple florals and taut elevated (VA kissing) acidity working through a firm, mineral-driven palate, still waiting to unknit. Tannins are fine and firm, and just starting to yield to a lingering finish kissed with scrubby wild mint and pink pepper. Will be interesting to watch this one unfold.Tasted: 20 November 2023Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
