Roche Nuances 2020
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaPénélope Roche comes from a family with deep winemaking roots, namely, six generations of viticulture and winemaking at Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion in Graves, Bordeaux. Together with her partner Dylan Roche, a bicycle mechanic in Burgundy who got the bug and obtained a diploma in viticulture and winemaking in Beaune followed by apprenticeships in the Côte d’Or, Chablis, and New Zealand before five years in Bordeaux teaching enology and sensory evaluation classes at Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, and managing a small winery in Margaux, they began Roche. Dylan has been farming vineyards and making wine in the Okanagan Valley since 2011. Looking back at the 2020 Nuances, a wine entering its fourth year in the bottle, it's instructive to note the nuances just beginning to emerge. The blend is 47% merlot, 28% cabernet franc, and 25% cabernet sauvignon, from sites up and down the Okanagan, and it is perfection. The energy and freshness here make this a textbook example of what can be done on the Naramata Bench. Look for a juicy red pitting black cherries with red plums dusted with violets that run the length of the wine. The acid and tannins are beginning to recede, leaving a delicious red wine in the race. Beef Wellington would be a great winter dish or a great piece of cheese. Ooh la la, good luck trying to find this wine.Tasted: 30 January 2025Tasted by: Prices:BC | $34.90 | 750ml | club members only |
