Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaSyrah took a beating in the winter of 2022, and it would be a shame if we were to lose a wine like this going down the road. The 2020 Lazy River has it all, just ten kilometres north of the US border in South Cawston, sitting on a stony site that reminds in some ways of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is an ungrafted block of Clone 877 at 18 years of age and is showing off. Open, fragrant, wild, and floral, it brings all the best that syrah can offer, and it likes the Similkameen. Blackberries and blueberries fight off the oak and finish with peppery hits that get you back to the glass for more. Grab some while you can, and open it slowly over the next decade.Tasted: 17 March 2023Tasted by: Prices:

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe blue wax takes you to the river. Located ten kilometres north of the US border in South Cawston, Lazy River Vineyard is nestled on the stony slopes that typify the Similkameen Valley. This comes from an ungrafted block planted in 2002 to clone 877. The nose has a lovely intensity led by fragrant wildflowers and lavender, followed by sappy, macerated blackberries, and black raspberries. There's a real depth and purity here, with a smart touch of oak that frames this Similkameen fruit, buzzing with a stony minerality.Tasted: 06 May 2023Tasted by: Prices:

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe smartly blue waxed Similkameen Valley Syrah is one of a quad of single vineyard syrahs released by Rust in the 2020 vintage. Each of the four is from clone 877, and aged in the same way, so you can compare site and soil. This is off Lazy River Vineyard, and its sandy clay loams dotted with limestone and granitic rock. This ungrafted syrah was planted in 2002. This was 25% whole cluster fermented, and aged in a mix of French and Hungarian oak for 18 months (33% new). It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Very floral, with downy violets and damson plums leading, and ripe cassis, crushed stones, and baking spices following. There's an alluring cracked peppercorn note laced throughout, with well placed and long well-knit tannins framing through a lingering finish. Quite striking, and certainly speaks of the windy, rocky, wild Similkameen.Tasted: 03 May 2023Tasted by: Prices:
