Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaBlue means the Similkameen when tasting the waxed dipped syrah put out by Rust Wine Co., one of four single-vineyard syrahs in 2018 and now 2019. The fruit comes off Lazy River Vineyard, whose sandy clay loams flecked with limestone and decomposed granite seems accomodating to syrah. At 17 years of age, the vines are just beginning to hit their stride in this wild and windy place. Look for cool, peppery fruit that mixes cassis with rich black plums and a natural dusting of savoury desert brush. The finish is sweet and balsamic spicy. The tannins are already disappearing quickly. Lamb chops and a plate of grilled vegetables would be a good match.Tasted: 31 January 2022Tasted by: Prices:

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe blue wax takes you to the river. Located ten kilometres north of the US border in South Cawston, Lazy River Vineyard is nestled on the stony slopes that typify the Similkameen Valley. From ungrafted vines planted in 2002, this shows juicy brambles and dark plum backed by more obvious oak, even though the level of new wood is about the same across all four of the 2019 syrahs. It's also the most savoury of the four, with real elegance and purity to the fruit. Well proportioned and balanced, this has the fruit intensity to seamlessly carry the structure and enjoy now.Tasted: 31 January 2022Tasted by: Prices:

Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe smartly blue waxed Okanagan Valley Syrah is one of four single-vineyard syrahs released by Rust in the 2019 vintage. It comes from Similkameen's Lazy River Vineyard and its sandy clay loams dotted with limestone and granitic rock. This clone 877 was planted, ungrafted, in 2002. The syrah spends ten months in French oak (20% new) before heading to bottle without fining or filtration. Super peppery, this fuller syrah is flooded with ripe blackberry, black plum, balsamic across a savoury, wild palate. Tannins are long and lightly sticky, binding this through the lingering peppery finish.Tasted: 14 February 2022Tasted by: Prices:
