Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe sandy soils of Ferreira Vineyard on the northern tip of the Black Sage Bench open with an expressive, opulent nose that is true to its origin, especially in vintages like 2020. Desert sagebrush and black pepper lead the charge here in a syrah with more weight and volume than their Similkameen label. The fruit is the ripest of the bunch, with black raspberries and blueberries running east to west and north to south. The tannins are dense but primarily sweet and will quickly dissipate through 2025-27. The finish is equally attractive, with just a hint of sweetness that lets you know it comes from a warm site.Tasted: 17 March 2023Tasted by: Prices:

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaRust takes us on another Okanagan and Similkameen syrah tour with the 2020 vintage. The yellow wax again leads us to the sandy soils of Ferreira Vineyard on the northern tip of the Black Sage Bench and a block planted initially to clone 877 in 2002. The fruit has an opulent ripeness, with macerated dark plums and wild blueberries accented by dried sage, mint, and white pepper. The 25 percent whole cluster gives this an extra layer of complexity and freshness, thoughtfully complementing the fruit, with the wood (33% new French and Hungarian) nicely tucked in the background. It's a skillful expression of Black Sage Bench syrah, with suave, refined tannins that make this a joy to drink even at this early stage.Tasted: 06 May 2023Tasted by: Prices:

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe smartly yellow waxed Okanagan Valley Syrah is one of a quad of single vineyard syrahs released by Rust in the 2020 vintage. Each of the four is from clone 877 and aged in the same way, so you can compare the site and soil. This comes from Black Sage Bench's Ferreira Vineyard and its volcanic, granitic sands at 333m. The grapes were planted in 2002. This was a 25% whole cluster fermented and aged in a mix of French and Hungarian oak for 18 months (33% new). It was bottled, unfined, and unfiltered. Ripe and sultry, with Christmas cake spices infiltrating dense cassis, aromatic plum, blueberry, black pepper, and violets. The volcanic sands are evident with the palate's persistent, alluring buzz. Tannins are sueded, with a slight bitter edge that rests on the dark cocoa finish. As expected from the southern Okanagan, a bigger, fleshier syrah, but with a lovely buzzy cool stony interest.Tasted: 03 May 2023Tasted by: Prices:
