Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFerreira Vineyard sits at the very northern edge of the Black Sage Bench in northeast Oliver. The soils are a mix of volcanic, granitic sands that give the wine a specific lift in acidity. The vines, clone 877, are now 17 years old. You don't feel much of an effect from its ten months rest in French oak, although only 20% was new. The attack is fresh, and the wine is light on its feet for a syrah with black plum and pepper more than anything else. The tannins are well managed, and the finish is a spicy affair. Definitely more northern Rhone, and very food friendly.Tasted: 31 January 2022Tasted by: Prices:

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaWinemaker Ryan de Witte takes us on an exploration of Okanagan and Similkameen syrah with the 2019 vintage. The yellow wax leads us to the sandy soils of Ferreira Vineyard on the northern tip of the Black Sage Bench. Here, clone 877 vines were planted in 2002 and bask in the afternoon sun. You certainly feel that warmth, with lush, high-toned dark fruits. There's no shortage of ripeness, but the fruit still maintains its freshness, with a complement of white pepper and integrated oak spices. It's a true-to-form expression of Black Sage Bench syrah that's already drinking beautifully on release thanks to carefully managed fine tannins. Unfined and unfiltered.Tasted: 31 January 2022Tasted by: Prices:

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe smartly yellow waxed Okanagan Valley Syrah is one of a quad of single vineyard syrahs released by Rust in the 2018 vintage. This comes from Black Sage Bench's Ferreira Vineyard and its volcanic, granitic sands, at 333m. and planted to clone 877 planted in 2002. This spent 10 months in French oak (20% new). Ripe and full, with perfumed blackberry, black cherry, black plum, seasoned with cracked pepper and violets. Tannins are well-integrated, hugging this to a lingering peppery finish. The soils add a prickly vibrancy to this wine, in its favour. Drinking very smartly now.Tasted: 14 February 2022Tasted by: Prices:
