Da Silva Merlot 2018
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaWinemaker Richard Silva is a larger than life character, and his blue label merlot, a giant of a wine, appeared to take its cue from him in 2018. The fruit is grown in two distinct areas: a Naramata fluvial terrace at Blenheim Hill Vineyard; and the Penticton West Bench at Lazy Dog Vineyard. Gravel, shale, and loams feed the fruit that is crushed and fermented in 1/2 ton batches before ageing in French and American oak barrels for 36 months. The colour is deep purple-black, and the nose lifted with spice and intense black cherry. The plate is smooth and warm with great intensity. However, it still has that merlot softness that mitigates the power, weight, and sweet fruit of what is a giant wine. Roast beef is its friend today; otherwise, this will need seven to ten years in a bottle.Tasted: 30 January 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $40.00 | 750ml | winery online/direct, select private retailers |
