CheckMate Artisanal Winery Capture Chardonnay Border Vista Vineyard 2020

Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAs far south as you can go in, the Okanagan Valley is the home of the Border Vista Vineyard on the Osoyoos East Bench. What Checkmate says "is the most challenging climat from which we source fruit." The sandy, lean soil contributes to an elegant structure aided by its lowest alcohol yet at 13.5%. 2020 is showing more length and complexity this year too. It opens with a light herbal scent, some desert brush and a savoury undercurrent. On top, the stone fruit and seaweed mineral notes add the perfect lift to the mix. This is a good version of Capture and the best I have tasted. The site earned its organic certification in 2021. The fruit is all 30-year-old Dijon clone 76, wild fermented and aged for 16 months in French oak (50 percent new). 2019 saw a jump in quality last year, and 2020 remains at that level.
