Mayhem Fortified Gewürztraminer 2019
Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe fruit was handpicked from Cellarsbend Vineyard in Naramata on October 10 at 28 Brix. The grapes are whole bunch pressed and kept at two degrees Celsius before being transferred to stainless where the grapes and juice receive a three day cold soak, followed by fermentation, eventually fortified with a grape-derived spirit to 18 percent alcohol, leaving a healthy amount of residual sugar. The finished juice was aged in a neutral oak vessel for 23 months before bottling, spending six months ageing outdoors in the Okanagan summer heat to help balance all the flavours and alcohol. It has a pleasant tropical fruit bent mixing mango, pears, and guava. Those flavours mix with caramel, raisins, tangerine, and exotic spices on the palate, while the alcohol and glycerol take over in the long warm, smooth finish. A fun drink that would be perfect with Christmas cake, a figgy pudding, or a bowl of spiced nuts.Tasted: 27 August 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $30.43 | 500ml | winery online/direct |
