Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom Naramata's Cellarsbend Vineyard, these gew grapes were whole bunch pressed and fermented down to 19 Brix before the sugar level was arrested with the addition of 93% alcohol. It was then moved to barrel for 20 months' rest, including one summer spent outside in the heat, evaporating water and concentrating the wine. This pours a pale yellow hue, much like a dry white, but that's where the comparison ceases. This is a fragrant, focused, concentrated wine from the first whiff, with ample orange blossom, marmalade, apricot jam, golden raisin, caramel, and gingersnap. The fuller palate is glossy and smooth and amply sweet, with a lingering anise/apricot glow. At 18%, a little goes a long way. Try pairing this, chilled, with pumpkin pie.Tasted: 15 October 2020Tasted by: Prices:
Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaMayhem Fortified Gew was picked at 24 Brix on October 13, 2018, from Cellarsbend Vineyard in Naramata. The grapes were whole bunch pressed and fermented down to 19 Brix before it was fortified with 93% alcohol. After that, it spent 20 months ageing in a barrel, including one summer spent outside in the heat, intensifying the oxidation and complex flavours. It was removed from the barrel, sterile filtered, and bottled in June 2020. Look for a super sweet cross between a sherry and a Tawny Port. The nose and attack is a mix of orange and caramel with a hint of spice. A summer serving could be over ice with orange slices. Ready to drink but will hold for a decade and beyond.Tasted: 20 August 2020Tasted by: Prices:
