Viña Chocalán Carmenère Gran Reserva 2018

Valle del Maipo, Region del Valle Central, ChileFrom the Coastal area of Maipo Valley, near the Maipo River and rooted in granitic clays and loam, this carmenere is aided by 10% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. After a stainless ferment, this remains on skins for an additional 10 days before 80% is moved to French and American oak barrels for 10-12 months of aging. Roasted meats, grilled onions, sappy branch, tar, and rubber fill this chewy, rustic, old-school red, finishing with a thick puff of smoke. Carmenère needn't retreat to this green rubbery caricature, and modern examples bypass this style altogether.Tasted: 05 May 2022Tasted by: Prices:
