Alto Maipo, Valle del Maipo, Region del Valle Central, ChileThere is something special about Pirque and the Alto Maipo, and it is just the kind of thing the Terroir Hunter Series was designed to find. The series is a prime example of what can be done in Chile, starting with an intense, smoky, cassis, cabernet sauvignon nose from fruit farmed at 700 meters above sea level on small sandy clay alluvial terraces. The attack is intense with savoury Maipo fruit. Generous swaths of texture roam your palate while the spice, tobacco, and complexity of this wine begin to overwhelm your palate. In the end, a floral, peppery mineral undertone mixes in the pepper and spice, leaving you wanting more. Impressive any way you cut it, and may I suggest you cut it with a steak.
