Vanessa Vineyard Syrah 2018

Cawston, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaExpect meaty, smoky, reduced notes on opening that is best dealt with by a splash decant and some time in the decanter. Similkameen syrah can be wild and raw, and this wine is both but with a sense of elegance that pulls you back to the glass. The juicy sweet and sour notes of damson plum thread through the peppery black fruit, toast, and vanilla, seemingly from the American oak. Big rich, and full-bodied, it will need time in the bottle before it fully matures. Vanessa Syrah is all estate fruit hand-picked and small-batch-fermented, including a small amount of viognier co-fermented with the syrah, Northern Rhône style. Post ferment, the wine was made almost entirely of free-run juice before ageing for 20 months in a combination of new and used oak American oak (60%) and French oak (40%). Total heat units for 2018 at Vanessa were 1730.5 Growing Degree Days, similar to 2017.Tasted: 05 March 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
