Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Rust Syrah (orange waxed capsule) comes off South Rock Vineyard at the southern end of the Golden Mile Bench. The site is home to some of the oldest vines in BC, and the syrah is perhaps the most fragrant and enticing of the four labels. The fruit is aromatic and bright with solid and floral undertones and rich plum over black and blue fruit flavours. It is a big red but balanced, before silky, peppery textures fill in the finish thanks to well-managed tannins. It is aged 16 months in American and French oak, of which some 42 percent is new. Hefty and elegant is a good combination.Tasted: 31 January 2022Tasted by: Prices: BC 44.00 winery direct, private wine shops

Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is the real deal and seems to be the unanimous favourite at GOW of the four 2019 syrahs released by winemaker Ryan de Witte. The orange wax evokes the early morning sunrise that you see from the Golden Mile Bench. The wine comes from South Rock Vineyard, at its southern edge, on gravelly clay and eroded mountain rock. It's complex and perfumed, with ripe, macerated dark fruits that are joined by a burst of violets, thyme, pepper, and a judicious touch of oak that works nicely with the fruit. Juicy, fine grained, and elegant, this is a seamless, complete wine that shows Okanagan syrah at its best.Tasted: 31 January 2022Tasted by: Prices: BC 44.00 winery direct, private wine shops

Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe smartly orange waxed Okanagan Valley Syrah is one of 4 single-vineyard syrahs released by Rust in the 2019 vintage. It comes from Golden Mile Bench's South Rock Vineyard's gravelled clays and older vines, at 300m, clone 877 planted in 2002. It is aged ten months in French oak, 20% new, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Super perfumed, with gobs of violets, iris perfumes a ripe base of black plums and blackberries. Tannins are ample but yielding, cushioning this to the lingering perfumed finish. It is quite a pretty syrah for all its heft, drinking very well now and with some time ahead.Tasted: 14 February 2022Tasted by: Prices: BC 44.00 winery direct, private wine shops
