CheckMate Artisanal Winery Queen's Advantage Chardonnay Combret Vineyard 2019

Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Queen's Advantage nods to the unknown clone inhabiting Combret Vineyard, the winery's single estate plot, now considered among the country's oldest, most traditional chardonnay vines. It was planted in 1973, the gnarly old vines deeply rooted in the Golden Mile Bench's calcium-carbonate coated stones on the hillside site. The vineyard, lovingly restored via precision agriculture, sits at 1266-1319 feet. The ferment is 70 percent wild in 50 percent new French oak, and aged 16 months in barrel. With time, the vines have returned to their own, offering more intense tropical fruit, spiced with ginger and wet stone. The QA is all about freshness and persistence now, in short, taking advantage of the older vines and what little yields they give, especially under the new irrigation regime. A richness here suggests crab or lobster dishes would be a good match.Tasted: 10 January 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
