CheckMate Artisanal Winery Queen's Advantage Chardonnay Combret Vineyard 2018

Golden Mile Bench, Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Queen's Advantage nods to the unknown clone inhabiting Combret Vineyard, the winery's single estate plot, now considered among the oldest chardonnay vines in the country. It was planted in 1973, leaving the gnarly old vines deeply rooted in the Golden Mile Bench's calcium-carbonate coated stones on the hillside site. The vineyard, lovingly restored via precision agriculture techniques, sits at 1266-1319 feet. The ferment is wild in 50 percent new French oak, followed by 16 months ageing in barrel. The nose opens with subtropical fruit and wet stones on a hot day. What begins with rich, peachy fruit leans out to more mineral, wet stone notes showing fine complexity. Crab or lobster are good matches.Tasted: 12 June 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
