Abbazia di Novacella Schiava 2020

Trentino- Alto-Adige, ItalyAbbazia is a monastery founded in 1142 by the Augustinian Order of Canons Regular in the Isarco River Valley and its slopes of granitic schist. They produce wine from their estate vineyards (mainly white grapes), complemented by neighbouring growers, like this schiava, for a total of 80 hectares. Schiava (aka Trollinger, or Vernatsch, or Traminer) is a red German/Italian variety that was likely first originally cultivated here, and has several clones. This schiava is wild and thorny, with ample dried florals, dried herbs and wild orange peel threaded through black cherry, black plum, white pepper on the medium bodied palate. Acidity is mountainous lofted, and tannins are fine yet firm, bracketing this to the lifted, floral finish. Quite unique, and alluring. Try with herbed wild mushrooms and/or rosemary grilled ribeye.Tasted: 21 January 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
