Castello di Ama San Lorenzo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016

Siena, Tuscany, ItalyIt's hard to overstate how good this wine is at a full five years old. It's only beginning to awaken, but this is what a Gran Selezione should be — intense and packed full of pure sangiovese fruit. It is a blend of four San Lorenzo estate vineyards that draws you into the glass with a savoury, dried herb nose that doesn't quit. The style is highly polished, mixing licorice and even a chocolate touch with perfectly ripened cassis. The finish is enveloped in tannins yet dispersed, portending perhaps even a greater wine down the road. Drink or hold seven to ten years; there is no rush. Marco Pallanti and and wife and co-owner Lorenza have farmed the Chianti Classico estate since 1974. Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is named after the picturesque San Lorenzo valley viewed from the estate's eighteenth-century Villa Pianigiani and Villa Ricucci. Over the last quarter-century, all of the vineyards have been replanted, and everything at the winery has been upgraded. The acclaimed single-vineyard wines grow on 75 hectares of vineyard amid 35 hectares of olive trees planted on a mix of limestone and clay at an elevation of 1,650 feet.Tasted: 16 November 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
