Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaThomas Bachelder is one of Canada's leading chardonnay and pinot noir specialists, honed through time in Bourgogne and Oregon, as well as years in the vineyards of his Niagara home base. Nord comes off a plot in the large, lauded Wismer-Foxcroft vineyard, 5.4 km from the lake, and 30 year old chardonnay vines at 110m altitude on a steep, stony-silty and dolomitic limestone slope. After a native ferment, this rested in older French barrels for near 16 months, sans bâtonnage. Striking wine, leading with a streak of flinty reduction before driving through green apple, lemon peel and pith, broken stones, and ample salts, all underpinned by a savoury fine lees bed. So much to unpack here now, this wine has ample years ahead. Energy, power, charisma, structure - this wine has it all.Tasted: 17 June 2022Tasted by: Prices:

Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaNord comes off a small plot within the more extensive and highly-lauded Wismer-Foxcroft Vineyard, some 5 km from Lake Ontario. The vines are 30+ years old and grow on a steep, stony-silty and dolomitic limestone slope. The result is saline citrus with all its energy intact after a 16-month rest in older French barrels sans bâtonnage. This wine is not about fruit, but rather a place, as it was last year. The limestone supplies the energy and tension to what is flinty, slightly reductive green apple, and lemon peel. Again this is the kind of wine that should make the Burgundians nervous, but at $48, I’m guessing no one takes it too seriously. Stock up while you can, folks.Tasted: 29 November 2021Tasted by: Prices:
