Cafaggio Chianti Classico 2016

Tuscany, ItalyVilla Cafaggio dates back to hundreds of years ago when the property was named Cahago, a local dialect for “enclosed, cultivated field.” It is situated at Panzano in Chianti, where it produces a DOCG Chianti Classico made from sangiovese grapes. The site is a mix of silty-clay loam soil originating from grey and olive green marl limestone and calcareous sandstone. 2016 was a great year for Chianti Classico, the kind of year you should stock up on a favourite and drink for the next 5 to 10 years. The nose is a floral affair with raspberry undertones and sweet spicing. The palate is medium-light and wonderfully dry. The acidity is lively, adding a sour cherry spine to the plummy, earthy black tea flavours that run the length of the wine. The perfect mid-week red for a mushroom pizza or pasta dish. The grapes are harvested in late September and early October, the fermentation tanks are broken up by pump-overs with air before maturation for 12 months in 65 hl Slavonian oak barrels, and then bottle aged for three months before release.
