Podere Le Ripi Amore e Magia Brunello di Montalcino 2016

Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, ItalyPodere le Ripi is a 54 hectare organic and certified biodynamic estate owned by Francesco Illy (yes, of the Trieste coffee family), filled with forest, olive trees, and vineyards. Illy found the Podere Le Ripi site in 1997, south east of Montalcino, and previously owned by a shepherd. He planted the vines three years later on its clay and limestone soils. This sangiovese is rooted in marl, clay and limestone, and was native fermented and macerated for 50 days in large, open top oak, before aging 33 months in these large barrels, followed by one year in cement vats, and one year in bottle prior to release. This opens with fragrant black fruit (fresh and dried), and subtle florals, with a slight wave of VA throughout. The palate is full and plumped with blackberry and balsamic, and housed by ample, grippy / gritty tannins, leading to an astringent finish. Old school in style, though some nice concentration on the palate.Tasted: 13 May 2021Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
