Pedro Parra y Familia Vinista Pais 2019

Itata Valley, ChileVinista is one of those otherworldy wines that is both thought-provoking and quaffable. It is made from a grape called pais (the first vinifera in Chile hundreds of years ago and known in California as mission) from old vineyards in the southern reaches of Chile. Vinista is distinctly pale in colour with delicate aromas of red berries, rose hip, iris, and herbal bay leaf. The flavours are a cerebral mix of cherry and raspberry with a touch of leather, smoke, and earth. Bright natural acidity without excessive tartness and filigreed tannins frame the sheer fruit without overwhelming it. Fermented in concrete with native yeasts, this is authentic wine personified. Elegant, multifaceted, light, lingering, and layered, Vinista is far more about place than grape. The senses are directed to the subterranean part of the wine, the sweet smell of granite, the salty nuances, and fine grit to the texture. What a gem this is from Chile's world-renowned 'Terroir Hunter' Dr. Pedro Parra. Few winemakers have a greater understanding of the relationship between rocks, fractures, roots, soils, and vines than Pedro, who believes that the grape is simply a vehicle for the more meaningful, deeper terroir message. More earth-driven and botanical that fruity, savoury food flavours will reveal additional red berry dimensions. Give this wine a bit of air and a slight chill and try with charcuterie, grilled herby lambchops, or some aged cheese.Tasted: 19 May 2021Tasted by: DJ KearneyPrices:
