Vodopivec Solo MM17 2017

Friuli-Venezia Giulia, ItalyPaolo Vodopivec owns this organically and biodynamically farmed Carso estate, on the border with Slovenia, and just north of Trieste.  Vodopivec (vo-do-pee-vetz), works solely with the Vitovska grape, and knows it intimately. Only 50 hectares of Vitovska currently exist in Carso, and 6 hectares are owned by the brothers on their limestone plateau estate. Vodopivec, inspired by the wines of Gravner, uses amphorae to age many of his wines. Solo, a single high-density plot of vitovska, comes from from a very rocky part of the vineyard at 260m. It was destemmed and native fermented in Georgian Anfora, in contact with the skins for one year, and plunged several times a day. The wine then matured for 18 months in large 3000L Slavonian oak barrels prior to bottling without fining or filtration. Pouring a golden hue, this powerful, textural wine teems with crushed stones, ash, bergamot, and ample mineral salts, woven with elderflower and apricot fuzz. Striking and memorable and age worthy, this is a stunner.Tasted: 19 April 2021Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
