Tantalus Pinot Noir Reserve 2018
East Kelowna, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe fourth edition of Reserve Pinot Noir opens a bit like last year with a dry, with reserved forest floor and dark fruit. The base of this label is a small, mid-slope block of 18 rows that contain the Dijon clone 667, and, in 2019, a small selection of what Winemaker David Patterson called a stand-out Clone 37 wine in barrel. It is all wild fermented, incorporating 50% whole bunches. The wine gets a single foot treading per day to ensure finesse. It is aged in French barriques for 15 months, 40 percent new, and then bottled unfined and unfiltered and kept at the winery for another 12 months. It's aromatic and delicate with silky textures and rich blue and black fruits and notes of soy that take me to the cooler parts of Sonoma. Wildfires delayed the ripening process, but the wine shows zero smoke damage.
