Modest Wines No. 4 Orange 2020
Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaModest Wines is a new, stand alone line from the folks at Mt Boucherie, spearheaded by new GM Jesse Harnden (ex of Hatch Wines). You can see and feel Jesse's thumbprint all over these eye catching, palate-stretching, contract-vineyard wines, especially for those used to the classic, staid, Mt. Boucherie style. No 4 Orange refers to the 4 classic grapes of Alsace, one of which they will utilize each year to make their orange wine. 2020 is pinot gris, grown in the Similkameen Valley's Lazy River Vineyard, native fermented whole berry in stainless, with 121 days there on skins. You can see it in the deep peach hue, and feel it with the ample, grippy, drying tannins bracing this wine from front through finish. Peach fuzz, apricot pit, bitter bergamot tea leaves rule, allowing a slender stream of bone dry apricot / pear to sneak through on the medium bodied palate. I think this has been the most tannic orange wine I've tasted to date, and that's saying something.
