Laughing Stock Vineyards Portfolio +02/10 2018

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is the 16th vintage of Portfolio, a wine which has consistently been one of the leading Bordeaux blends from the Okanagan. It's also been consistently true to Laughing Stock's house style. The 2018 vintage is merlot dominant, like its predecessors (with, I believe, one exception: the 2010 vintage), rounded out by cabernet sauvignon (34%), cabernet franc (15%), malbec (3%), and petit verdot (3%). The oak is lavish (42% new), but not to the detriment of the wine. It tastes like no money was spared on the barrel program, with perfumed, expressive spices that are at home next to the lush, high-toned black fruits. It exudes long hang time, perhaps not far from some stewed character. And, of course, there's Laughing Stock's hallmark suave, glycerous palate, a style which other wineries have tried to emulate but few have mastered. It's not as seamless as previous vintages, though. Powdery, granular tannins present themselves on the finish, which is marked by disjointed acidity. But, it still provides a lot of pleasure for those seeking a hedonistic pour, and, as always for this wine, it's ready to drink upon release.Tasted: 09 April 2021Tasted by: Prices:
