Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaWith only 14 acres planted in the Okanagan (as of 2019), carménère is a rarity and, unfortunately, it's often priced as such. For such a limited production, there is still a lot of stylistic diversity between producers. This Black Hills carménère is a leaner expression at just 12.6% abv, but don't take that to mean unripe. There's a real purity and juiciness to the black fruits here, which is nicely accented by spicy herbs and green peppercorn. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaWinemaker Ross Wise has been busy tweaking the wines at Black Hills, and this carmenere is a good example. At 12.6 percent alcohol, he awakens the fruit, leaving the warm, dead fruit flavours that mark many south Okanagan red wines for a fresher, more nimble palate. The nose is classic Chilean carmenere with that crushed dried leaf scent mixed with jalapeno. The palate is a mix of smoky, meaty, cedary, peppery notes with black cherries and sweet brown spices.
