Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2018
Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, North Island, New ZealandTrinity Hill was one of the first to plant on the Gimblett Gravels, back in 1993. Winemaker Warren Gibson has been overseeing the 80ha of vineyards since 1997. Each individual site and clones was fermented separately, with a range of maceration periods to suit each batch. 30% whole bunches were included, as was a small percentage of Viognier skins to further aid in complexities. Once blended, the wine aged for eight months in 5000L oak ovals before bottling in February 2019. Syrah's savoury, peppery side leads here, with ample black peppercorns seasoning the pure black cherry, wild blackberry, downy violet fruit. The wood and tannins are seamlessly integrated into the wine, with a trace of gravels / graphite, imbuing it with elegance, while the whole bunches provide a charming lift and brightness that carries this to the lingering, smoked stone finish.
