Montes Alpha Syrah 2018

Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileColchagua is located in the central zone of Chile, less than two hours driving south of Santiago. It is here that the Montes vineyards are found in the famed terroir of Apalta. In the same valley, between the Coastal Range and the sea, the Montes Marchigüe vineyards' rolling hills march toward a slow, measured maturity, a mere 25 kilometres from the cool Pacific Ocean. The syrah comes in at 90 percent topped up with 7% cabernet sauvignon and 3% viognier. Post ferment, 55% of the wine is aged for a year in first, second, and third-use French oak barrels. The wine is correctly wild with noticeable bay leaf and boldo scents. On the palate, the intensity continues with meaty, savoury, tobacco, black cherry, coffee, licorice notes before a minty, gamey finish. Tannins are fine and dense, suggesting this will mellow nicely over the next decade. If you serve it now, the match is grilled lamb.Tasted: 18 February 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
