Ogier Clos de L'Oratoire des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2017

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceOgier is known for its more restrained Châteauneuf-du Pape style, starting with a fresh, clean nose as evident in this 2017 version. If 2016 was outstanding, 2017 is only a half step behind. The Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes benefits from a diversity of soils mixing limestone, sand terraces, and red clay. Strawberry and raspberry is flecked with licorice and spice and a dusting of garrigue on the nose. The attack is elegant at 14.5 percent, and the textures supple with well-managed, soft tannins and more ripe orange, raspberry, black cherry and even a hint of stones and minerals underneath. You can drink this now with grilled lamb chops or cellar it for a decade and beyond. The wine undergoes a long post-fermentation vatting, then ageing in a mixture, both in terms of size and age, of oak barrels for 14 months.Tasted: 11 January 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
