Yalumba Samuel's Collection Bush Vine Grenache 2018

Barossa Valley, South Australia, AustraliaFrom its lustrous ruby gleam, to the long dusty cherry finish, this lithe red touches all the brain's pleasure points. Rose petals, ripe red cherry, white pepper, orange oil and a gorgeous menthol perfume grace the nose, while fresh plum, wild berries and macerated strawberries define the flavours. Beautifully composed acid and gentle tannins are impeccably balanced and harmonious. Best of all is the sleek, silken mouth-feel that grenache can achieve especially when the vines are old - and in this case old means vineyards planted from 1898 to 1973. Such distinguished Barossa Valley floor fruit manages to be fresh, juicy, elegant, and elevated alcohol embellishes the glossy texture without a trace of burn. Eight months in 2-6 year old hogshead oak casks burnishes the fruit without overpowering it. This is blissful wine to savour with a tender grilled pork chop, herby lamb burger or hard aged cheese. Try ageing a few bottles for five+ years; you'll be rewarded with the kind of caressing richness that (like pinot noir) worthy bottles of grenache can deliver.Tasted: 19 August 2020Tasted by: Prices:
