L'Acadie Vineyards Prestige Brut 2013

Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, CanadaWines that present wine lovers with fascination and discovery sometimes taste better. That's true for this wine. Made from 100% L'Acadie blanc, this sophisticated hybrid tolerates Nova Scotia's abridged growing season. Winemaker Bruce Ewert left British Columbia decades ago for the Gaspereau Peninsula and has since devoted himself to making excellent sparkling wines from L'Acadie, bred in 1953 in Niagara. Bright gold, the wine pours frothily but then settles down into languid threads of tiny bubbles. The nose deserves your attention before you sip deeply. It's complex and eloquent with lemon curd, buttery brioche, tarte tatin, and two things that make the wine special: wonderful maturation character of toast and spearmint; and an unmistakable terroir note of briney mineral salts. Fresh as a daisy, surging acidity helps this seven-year-old wine taste youthful with green apple, Meyer lemon, and subtle stone fruit. But then caramelized toasty, gingery flavours take hold, tapering into a dry, dusty finish. This duality of fresh yet mature, and light but with a depth of flavour makes for a serious, authentic wine, imbued with complexity, finesse, and impeccable balance. It does not need to be elevated or completed by food. Still, you could pair truffle chips, crab cakes, or perhaps obviously, Nova Scotia lobster tails liberally anointed with lemony butter.Tasted: 03 July 2020Tasted by: DJ KearneyPrices:
