Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaIt’s hard to imagine cabernet sauvignon finding a permanent home in British Columbia, but it now seems global warming is making anything possible. Fragrance in a cabernet is an enduring quality, and this wine is full of cedar, tobacco and cassis, flecked with liquorice and bright acidity. Aged 20 months in 40 percent new French oak, this is as good as it gets for a cabernet sauvignon given 66 percent of the fruit is located on Mount Boucherie in West Kelowna. No doubt, the one-third of fruit from the south Okanagan serves to bolster the structure with a bit of flesh and weight as well as valley-wide low yields. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaCab sauv growing in cool climate West Kelowna? Would have been nutters to think of just 10 years ago. But the majority of this ripe, dense blend comes from Quails’ Gate’s estate Boucherie Mt vineyards, with the remaining third from a grower in the South Okanagan. The whole was aged 20 months in French oak (40% new). Thick cassis, blackberry is seasoned with smoke and bound by toasted cedar, finishing with a hard press, bitter cherry finish. Quails' Gate Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is predominantly from Quails’ Gate’s Boucherie Mountain Vineyards in West Kelowna, with approximately one-third sourced from a grower in the South Okanagan. It was aged for 20 months in French oak, of which 40 percent was new. Cabernet sauvignon in West Kelowna? You better believe it. There’s no shortage of ripeness here, clocking in at 14.5% abv with a jammy quality to the fruit. It could benefit from a notch more freshness, but it’s a big, bold red that will appeal widely. The 2017 vintage was notoriously low-yielding, and this has the elevated weight and concentration that you’d expect as a result. The challenge, though, was managing incredibly tannic fruit. The winemaking team at Quails’ Gate was evidently up to the task, as the tannins here are surprisingly fine and balanced.
