Gérard Bertrand Clos du Temple 2018

Cabrières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceClos du Temple is located in the historical terroir of Cabrières, in the heart of Languedoc, 240 metres above the Mediterranean with a southern/south-western exposure. The old vines reside at the birthplace of rosé, on an eight-hectare/seven parcel site of schist and limestone. It was designed to mirror a temple: “the foundation is grenache, the columns cinsault, the walls syrah, the architecture mourvèdre, and the roof viognier.” Although you do not feel it, it is aged in the barrel to reinforce its structure and to give the wine the capacity to age and work with food. Its unique bottle shape represents a temple with geometric lines based on the “golden ratio.” The royal blue on the capsule pays homage to King Louis 14th, a great admirer of the wine of Cabrières. At Clos du Temple, the land is farmed with biodynamic principles, using horses and mules to strengthen the connection between the mineral, plant, animal, and human worlds. So how does it taste? It has remarkable finesse with apricots and tangerines streaked with strawberries that tumble onto the palate where a light grapefruit pith takes over through the alluring finish. Complexity and length add to its food-friendly character, all in a subtle manner. Finally, a dusting of mineral and garrigue finishes the picture of this exceptional bottle.
