Colomé Malbec Estate 2017
Salta, North, ArgentinaColomé claims to have the highest elevation vineyards in the world at their site in the Upper Calchaquí Valley of Salta. This estate malbec draws from vineyards ranging in elevation from 2,300 to 3,111 metres, before being aged in French oak barriques for 15 months. It shows blueberry compote and jammy blackberry alongside a good dose of new oak. There may be no shortage of ripeness, and the 14.9% abv backs that up, but it’s not over the top and the wine manages to retain an impressive freshness with savoury graphite and gravel notes in the background. The oak also really works with the fruit, and is clearly of high quality. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, not quite as full as the nose would indicate, with beautifully refined tannins.
